Vintage Hand Towels, not for hands

No theme today.  I just thought I'd share a favorite old thing.

I recently found these hand towels that my (step) mom had.  I'm not sure when she acquired these, but I do recall that they were in her powder room in 1960.  They look like they may be from the 40s or 50s, but I'm just guessing.

I was a child in 1960, and while Dad and I were visiting her (she was not yet my mom), she told me these were for "show" and not for hands, then pointed me to the user-friendly towel.  I was none-the-less fascinated by them.

I've had them packed away all these years since she passed away, and finally put them in a display frame.

Aren't they cute!  As an 8-year old, I thought they were quite risque!  Wonder what my grandkids think of them when they come visiting. ....

I doubt that she did the applique and embroidery work, but she may have.  I've not seen any other linens like it, though.

If anyone knows what this style of embellishment is called, please let me know.

Until next time....

  1. they're quite precious - and scandalous! :)

you should link up to rubbish tuesday with these - not just rubbish, but old things in general.

  2. Thanks, Theresa. I just may do that.

  3. Those are absolutely adorable, I've never seen anything like them! What a treasure.

  4. What a great way to display your treasures, Karen! I love what you did with them, and can certainly see why you were so enamored with them, then and now!!
