Pillow stuffed with Lavender

Here's a little pillow I made for my Bridal Shop.  It required a little piece-work which was a challenge for me since I'm not a quilter.  But it turned out alright...not perfect....but all right.  It was supposed to be 10" x 10", but it's 11.25" x 11.25".  How did this happened?  Who knows. Probably because "Precision" is NOT my middle name.  I've always struggled with sewing with precision.  SOMEthing always has gone irreparably wrong each time I try it seems.  I'm not giving up, though...must practice more I fear (grin).

What's so aggravating is that in my former life, I was a geologist.  The biggest portion of my time was spent working with micro-fossils which required maneuvering them with a paint brush trimmed to 3 hairs-- yes, I said 3 hairs.  Several days (and some nights) in a row, I'd pick them up, move them to a plate and glue them on for photographing later.  Tedious? Yes.  Required precision? Yes.  Was I good at it? Yes.  Did I enjoy it? Yes.  So, why can't I get it right now when it comes to sewing?  I can only guess it's because I'm now working toward a shorter deadline.  Before, I had the luxury of months and years to get things absolutely right.  Now, I know I don't have months and years to work on the details, and I end up distracted with thinking too far ahead and making some small mistake in the present.  Sigh.  I just can't get into the "zone" like I used to.

Well, I hope to set some time aside soon for my next project which will be a garment.  I enjoy constructing apparel where "fudging" is allowed and often celebrated.  This will help relieve some of the stress I'm feeling with these pieced articles I've been doing lately.  I'm thinking of designing a couple of new nightgowns for warmer weather.   Ahhhh.  Therapy, sweet therapy ;)  'Til next time .....

  1. I remember the words of a friend when I used to decorate cakes and they'd never come out perfect: a blind man would be glad to see it. And another, perfection only exists in Heaven. The little imperfections are okay, Karen, carry on!! I'll bet none of us could see the imperfections that you think are glaring!!

  2. Pretty little pillow, regardless of it's size, and I bet it smells nice too.

Nice work I think, don't be so hard on yourself.

  3. Thanks, Nancy and Sandy. You're right, I shouldn't fret over these things so much. It does smell nice, Sandy...makes my sewing room smell soooo lovely.

  4. That pillow is gorgeous! Honestly Karen, I think precision is over-rated in quilting, lol....how neat that you're a geologist!

  5. Karen, I can so realate to you! No matter how carefully I cut and sew, my quilting never comes out exactly right. Sigh....

  7. Love your lavender pillow. Fudging is artistic freedom. I hardly follow a pattern and when I do, I usually change things here and there.

  9. I know what you mean, I can measure, measure again, cut, measure. Yep, everything's fine. Sew a perfect 1/4 inch seam, and suddenly, it's the wrong size! Your pillow is beautiful no matter what size it is!
